Oneida Road to Code Project

The Oneida City School District’s Road to Code Project will create learning opportunities for students that will directly support district technology standards, student achievement objectives, multiple Next Generation Learning Standards, including the NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency Learning Standards. Project activities will also support the development of ISTE Skills and the 4 Cs: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.

The Oneida City School District is a small city school district in central СÖíÊÓƵ that serves approximately 1,857 students in four elementary (gr. Prek-5), one middle (gr. 6-8), and one senior high (gr. 9-12) school. The racial composition of the student population is 88% white; 4% multi-racial; 3% American Indian; 2% Hispanic or Latino; 1% Black or African American; and 1% Asian or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander. Other characteristics of the student population include: ELL 1%; Students with Disabilities 17%; Economically Disadvantaged 56%; and Homeless 1%. Students attend their neighborhood elementary school through 5th grade and then all attend a single school starting in grade 6. OCSD is identified as a Target District; North Broad Elementary is identified as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement School.

This Learning Technology Road to Code Project targets approximately 1,379 students in grades K-8, including those attending St. Patrick’s School (grades preK-6) and Holy Cross Academy (grades 7-12), nonpublic schools within the district’s boundaries. Project activities will impact 4 building principals and benefit 10 teachers over the course of the program. The Administrator for Technology and Special programs will guide and oversee the project.

Through this LTG project, educators will deliver innovative professional training to participating teachers and librarians; create a K-8 standards-based digital literacy curriculum to enhance STEAM education: provide extended learning day opportunities for students to engage in coding activities; and develop a cadre of instructional leaders to serve as mentors and resources to other teachers and librarians.

The goals of the Oneida Road to Code Project are to:

  • Expose students to coding at an early age and throughout their school career to encourage interests in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) and prepare them for the modern workforce and
  • Increase district capacity/systems for effective teaching and the use of technology to ultimately impact student performance and sustain positive project outcomes beyond the grant period.
