TOC II Spotlight: Lehman College

We featured this TOC II spotlight in our

TheÌýLehman Urban Transformative Education (LUTE)ÌýTOC IIÌýprogram provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate studentsÌýin teacher education programsÌýto gain experience working in high-needs schools that serve primarily minority students from low-income families. The LUTE-TOCÌýIIÌýstudentsÌýcomplete internships in these schools and in theÌýLehman College'sÌýSaturday Academy. The Saturday AcademyÌýgives low-income or first-generation college-boundÌýstudents the opportunity to takeÌýacademicÌýcourses and participate in workshops focused on social andÌýemotionalÌýlearning.Ìý

Students in ninth and tenth grade from TOC II partner high schools attend the Saturday Academy, where they take classes and participate in mentoring activitiesÌýto increase their college- and career-readiness. TheÌýLUTE-TOCÌýIIÌýinterns serve as mentors to the high school students, while the instructors who teach in the Academy mentor theÌýLUTE-TOC II students.

One of theÌýLUTE-TOC II interns, Sain Mota, has found the experience to be enjoyable and rewarding.ÌýAccording to Sain, "I [observed] almost every teacher in the Saturday Academy and every single one of them had a different way of teaching. I aspire to become like these teachers."
